How to Correctly Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
People who face problems with obesity and try to look for solutions through methods like dieting etc, are very likely to have come across the term, body mass index. Body mass index is nothing but a relative term used to analyze the fatness of a person by comparing two people of the same height. It is of immense help to people who wish to cut down on their weight and need to know as to how overweight they are, as compared to a normal person. BMI varies from one ethnic group to the other.
Body mass index color chart
The BMI formula used in the metric system, consists of a person’s weight (kilograms) divided by height (meters), then squared. Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2. Imperial system users can calculate their BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and then multiplied by a conversion factor of 703. Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703.
This equation can help you check your body mass index, by just entering the right height and weight values. Thus, you can know as to, in what body mass index category you fall.

Body mass index categories
People who are underweight usually have a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9, whereas an overweight person would range between 25 and 29.9. The body mass index over 30 is an indication that the person is obese and BMI of over 40 refers to morbid obesity. One has to note that body mass index does not take into account the muscle mass that is usually denser than fat and thus, athletes, bodybuilders and pregnant women can give results that don’t match with ideal case.
These days BMI calculators of pocket size are available to help you gauge your BMI category. They are used in the gym and other fitness centers to tell people whether they fall in a healthy range or not. One has to note that BMI just provides an idea about the height to weight ratio and does not reveal anything about the body composition. People with high BMI need to take care, so that they do not fall prey to any diseases related to heart malfunctioning.
The alternative for body mass index calculators are weight charts, as they provide a better idea about the ideal weight based on body frame size.
